Democracy Wins!
It’s been a big week in America. Piles of paper political flyers that arrived after people voted. Political “waves” that didn’t happen. December run offs in the making. Races so close that a winner can’t yet be declared. Favorite candidates who fell by the wayside and lame ducks who took home the win.
27% of the Gen Z crowd turned out to vote, and even put one of their own in office (Maxwell Frost, 25 years of age, will be the first of this generation to become a member of Congress).
We now have representation from each age category, with Diane Feinstein being the oldest member of Congress (and a member of the silent generation).
The times they are a changing (with apologies to Bob Dylan).
It was a big one with every seat in the House of Representatives up for grabs, as well as 35 U.S. Senate seats and 36 governorships. Several more races for secretary of state, attorney general or control of state legislatures could have wide-ranging effects on the management of the 2024 presidential elections, as could hot-button issues like abortion rights, climate change and health care.
But for now, democracy wins. The fact that there were so many close races and ballot measures that barely won — or lost — leads to one wonderful conclusion. People voted.
They voted for what mattered to them. They voted for what they believed in. Many will continue the good fight into the next Presidential election — and beyond.
The United States may be in a bit of a mess right now, but the ugliness we are living through has given people a renewed sense of purpose.
People are realizing that they care about this country.
That’s a win of liberty and justice for all.
