Make your bed

Clean up this mess

Take out the garbage

Do your chores

We’ve heard them all. At one time we felt our parents were so MEAN to ask these things of us. As adults we understand they are simply part of life.

Is there a meaning past the literal aspects of these demands upon our time, wants and wishes?

It is believed that if you make your bed each morning you will have accomplished one thing that day. Some days that’s enough. Some days you desperately need to know this. Are you one of those people who throw some blankets or a sleeping bag on top of the mattress and call it good? You can still make it look nice in the morning. When you return to sleep in the evening, this may be the only sense of accomplishment you have.

Cleaning up our messes can be exhausting, humbling, and a never-ending battle. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Is your mess literal or figurative? Or both? My spouse is a huge proponent of “the lazy man’s way.” All that entails is taking care of something as soon as it happens so you don’t live with the dread of having to get back to it. It also keeps things from piling up until you can do nothing at all.

Taking out the garbage is another both literal and figurative task. Literally taking out the garbage…
