Autumn Reflections

The change of seasons is a wonderful time to check in with yourself.

When you hear that something is about to change in life, do you find yourself thinking about the positive memories or the negative ones?

The gardening season is coming to an end, which gives me a moment to reflect on both the plus and minus aspects of this year’s planting, tending, and harvesting experiences.

I could dwell on the fact that I had to plant carrots FOUR TIMES before I could get one seed to germinate. I could bemoan the fact that our box garden garlic bed completely fell apart. I could gripe about the fact that I never did get those front yard weeds completely under control.

Instead, I prefer to think about how we had fresh peas until July this year. I gloat over the fact that I finally got squash to grow. I delight in our abundance of tomatoes and parsnips. I am in awe of the cucumbers that grew up the side of our house. I am deeply satisfied that we discovered a strawberry farm and fruit stand that supplied us with food we didn’t grow on our own.

The autumn months give us a chance to reflect on all aspects of life. It is the season of endings. It is a season that combines nostalgia for traditions with excitement over new beginnings.

Grab a cup of your favorite hot beverage, bundle up, sit on your deck or front porch, in your yard, or even the closest city park. Look around and consider how the year has been going for you so far. What have you accomplished, what have you missed out on, how do you want to move forward with life?

The change of seasons is a wonderful time to check in with yourself. You might be surprised at what you discover.
