Musings on the words of Sojourner Truth

What’s been on my mind of late? Sojourner Truth. An amazing human who was a crusader for women’s rights in the mid-1800’s, especially the rights of black women.

Ms. Truth believed that if the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, women together should be able to get it right side up again!

Many times, over the course of history, the world has turned upside down. Many times, it has turned right side up again.

The circle goes ‘round and ‘round. Something to remember, whether life is on the upswing, or so depressing that you can’t find it in yourself to move forward.

Whether you are on an upswing or down, try to remember that most people are simply trying to get by in life. They laugh. They love. They work. They die. They may see the same world through a very different lens, and still be people who are kind, caring, and want the best for their neighbors, family and friends.

Kindness counts. Listening is key. Taking a stand is important yet consider that your way may not be someone else’s.

The speech that made Sojourner Truth famous was presented in 1851 in a presentation titled “Ain’t I a Woman”. The first black woman to take a white man to court and win. A woman who was sold at auction for $100 along with a flock of sheep — and eventually walked away from it all, as she felt that running was wicked and not the right thing to do. A woman who’s concern for others only ended with her death at the age of 86.

She did what she felt was important. She did what she felt was right. She cared for others and how the world treated them.

Her legacy lives on. Will yours?
